Abstract

The gut microbiota has been the subject of increasing scientific research, focusing on its influence on host health and disease, with the feeding being the most impact factor in its composition and regulation. In this study, a consensus was observed among the authors that high consumption of simple sugars is associated with the development of intestinal dysbiosis and an imbalance in the composition of the gut microbiota, which in turn can trigger a cascade of metabolic complications, such as intestinal inflammation, endotoxemia (presence of bacterial toxins in the bloodstream), dyslipidemias and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study aimed to investigate the relationship between high sugar consumption and the intestinal microbiota and to study its relationship with the development of diseases. A Systematic review of scientific literature was carried out, using national and international articles found in the PubMed, Google Scholar, SciELO and Portal e Periódicos CAPES published in the last 5 years.
